Cholla Trail Camelback Mountain Hike

Today we hiked the Cholla Trail Camelback Mountain Hike in Scottsdale Arizona. It’s called the Cholla Trail, but it’s on Camelback Mountain. There are two different entrances or starting points that you can hike. The one we chose off Cholla Lane has a more gradual slope; however, the last quarter mile of the hike gets very steep.

It took about 3 hours from start to finish. The other side of the mountain is shorter, but very steep all the way. We did not try that side of the mountain. As far as difficulty, when we first started, we thought it was going to be a beginner to intermediate hike. However, once we got about three-quarters of the way up the mountain, it became quite challenging.

Not only did the hill get very steep, but there were three or four spots that had incredible heights. About halfway through the video, we show a narrow part of the path where there is a straight drop on one side, and the other side is a slide to your death.  haha.  Just like in life the hard work paid off in the end, the views of Scottsdale, and Phoenix were breathtaking! It felt like we could see for a hundred miles, in every direction.

Helpful Tips Before Venturing on the Hike.

Here are a few things to be aware of when taking this hike:

1. Parking – We went on a Wednesday morning in November, and we got the last parking spot on the street. If you plan on doing this hike during the weekend, make sure you get there very early, or I doubt you’ll find parking.

2. You are NOT allowed to bring your dog.

3. You are NOT allowed to use your drone.

4. Make sure you bring a lot of water and even some food. We have an awesome backpack called the North Coyote Cooler Backpack that we use on our hiking excursions. This backpack is amazing!! You can buy it on Amazon for around $35. The bottom half is cooler and comes with ice packs so you can pack it with either water or food. The top half of the backpack is where I usually put my camera gear or extra clothing. The straps are comfortable, and I feel like I could have this on all day long. We have gone through a few cooler backpacks over the years, and this one has turned out to be our favorite. For us, this checks all the boxes for an all-day hike.   We take it on the plane as a carry-on, so we have a cooler to use while we are at our destination.  We use the PRIMOCEAN Backpack 40L-50L, Tactical, Hiking, Lunch Box Traveling Insulated Cooler Bag.

4. Make sure your shoes have good support and grips. I found it was even more difficult in some instances on the way down. There were a few times I felt like I was slipping down the rocks, so be sure your hands are empty especially the last quarter mile.

5. Make sure to bring your camera the pictures are beautiful.  The camera that I use for all my travel videos is the GoPro Hero 6.  I’ve found its truly the best travel camera.  If you’re interested click  here to purchase.
