Bocas del Toro – Romantic Getaway Couples Series

Panama is a place of immense beauty, lush tropical landscaping, and gorgeous sandy beaches. Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean coast offers relaxation, adventure, romance, and beauty all in one location. If you’re searching for a place to get away from it all to relax, enjoy the sun, yet be minutes away from restaurants, nightlife, things to do, Koko Acqua Lodge is the perfect place to stay in Bocas del Toro.

Bocas del Toro was our first stop after our month-long stay in Costa Rica. If you are looking for a relaxed Caribbean vibe Bocas del Toro is the perfect destination for your next tropical vacation.  We choose Koko Acqua Lodge as our romantic Getaway Couples choice for Bocas del Toro on Isla Colon. The romantic bungalows overlooking the water in Saigon Bay is the perfect place to enjoy the gorgeous view while spending quality time together.  Most of the hotels, restaurants, and bars are located on Isla Colon; although, the other islands are just a short ride by the water taxi.

While traveling the world we look for romantic getaway destinations for couples that we would recommend to our subscribers. We always tour a few resorts, and at the end of our stay in each country or town, we select one resort or accommodation to highlight in a video and blog post. We interview the manager, tour the property, and find out about all the amenities so we can be confident with our recommendation for the best romantic getaway accommodations for our subscribers.

We write these blog posts after spending time in the location, talking with locals and long term expats. We do however spend a lot of time checking the area, making sure we feel safe, eating at the restaurants, etc. We always tour a few properties before deciding. For us, the surroundings, (natural beauty) and amenities carry the most weight in our decision.

While traveling the world we choose destinations to highlight in our “Getaway Couples Series.” Koko Acqua Lodge was an easy pick. Gorgeous views, great amenities, and an unbelievable value!

How Do You Get To Bocas del Toro?

From Costa Rica:

We stayed in Bocas del Toro after a month-long stay in Costa Rica. We took a shuttle from Puerto Viejo Costa Rica to the boat launch (lancha) in Almirante Panama. We took a water taxi to Isla Colon, which is a 40-minute ride. The water taxi costs $6 per person one-way.

There is also a public bus option from Costa Rica to Almirante; however, we didn’t choose that option because we were concerned about crossing the border alone and the cost was not much different when taking a shuttle. The shuttle driver basically “held our hand” through the whole process, border patrol, immigration, which included transferring us to a person to walk us over the border to another shuttle driver in Panama.  I’ll be honest this was a bit stressful at times.  I ripped my fingernails apart during the trip (another story). lol

By Plane:

You can fly from Panama City Tocumen (PTY), Albrook (PAC) or San Jose Costa Rica (SJO) directly to Bocas del Toro. Flying directly would be the fastest and most expensive way to get to Bocas del Toro.

By Bus:

Flying into Albrook airport (PAC):
By bus, the ticket will cost you $30, and it takes approximately 10 hours to get to Almirante. The journey is usually made at night; this is the longest and least expensive option. Buses depart from the Albrook bus terminal. You must go to the terminal window to purchase your ticket; currently, there are no online ticket sales. You can buy your ticket one-day prior to departure at the bus station ticket counter. You ask to buy a ticket to Almirante and all the people traveling with you must be present when purchasing the ticket(s). Make sure you have a jacket or dress in layers the air conditioning is usually on full blast. Upon arriving in Almirante, you will need to take a taxi to the pier ($1 per person) to catch the water taxi to Bocas del Toro ($6 per person).

For updated bus schedules call:
The telephone numbers are:
Albrook (Panama): (+507) 303-6326
Admiral: (+507) 758-3278

Flying into David (DAV)
By Bus from the David terminal:

Make sure you go to the side where buses depart as opposed to arrivals. You will be getting on a bus to Changuinola. The ride takes approximately 4 hours, and it costs $8. You will need to take a taxi to the pier ($1 per person) to catch the water taxi to Bocas del Toro ($6 per person).

Water taxis run from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

• Airport Distance
– 10 Hours from Alderbrook Airport (PAC)

The drone we use is the DJ Spark with Remote Control Combo.  We like this drone because it’s compact, it’s effortless to take on trips, it’s easy to fly, and it shoots 1080p.  All of our drone footage on our blog posts and youtube videos are taken with this drone. We love this backpack!!  The cooler section is smaller; however, all the compartAnother item we use daily is our Primocean Backpack with an insulated cooler bag.  We use this as Christie’s carryon bag on the plane and as our cooler at our final destination.  We used to use a different backpack and we switched to this one because it’s better made of durable material with quality zippers.  The compartments and the quality of the backpack make it a much better choice for basically the same cost. We wish we would have thought of this item a long time ago. If you are interested in checking it out here is the Amazon link: Click Here.
