Best Nightlife Tour in Thessaloniki, Greece's Hidden Gem

2 Traveling Lovers

While traveling through Greece, we made a great decision to spend a week in Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is truly one of Greece’s hidden gems, and we were excited to find the Best Nightlife Tour In Thessaloniki. We wanted to find a tour where we could experience the thriving nightlife in Thessaloniki while learning about the city’s rich history, sampling some of the local cuisines and all the while having a few drinks. Doesn’t that sound like a fun tour? We thought so.

After doing extensive research, we felt the best way to do this was to find a local tour company to show us the town.  We came across the tour “Urban Adventures Bites, Spirits & Romance Tour,” and decided to give them a try, and are we ever glad we did!! Our tour guide was professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. Below we will go over a few of the highlights for us during this walking tour. We suggest if you decide to do a tour in Thessaloniki to give Urban Adventures shot. Below are some of the reasons we felt this was an excellent tour:

1. Organization – Great organization all around. Urban Adventures had Google Maps pinpointed for exactly where we needed to meet and what time. Our guide was there waiting for us, dressed professionally with an Urban Adventures T-shirt on and he had a sign, so he was easy to find.

2. Tour Guide – One thing we loved was how knowledgeable our tour guide was about Thessaloniki history. Every question we had, he was able to answer. He even told us that he researches areas before he does the walking tours. Very professional and everything we wanted to hear as a customer. Another thing that stuck with us was at the end of the night he made sure we got to a cab to get home safely.

Thessaloniki History, Local Cuisine, and Drinks

3. Tour – The tour was a mixture of history, beautiful buildings, local cuisine, and drinks. We felt that our tour guide picked interesting areas of Thessaloniki with a ton of history. We also loved the stops we made for food and drinks. One of the places was a beautiful Turkish bath. It was a rooftop type bar with gorgeous lighting of the actual bathhouse rooftop.

We saw Thessalonikis oldest mosque built in 1467; it’s called Hamza Bey or as some citizens call it Alkazar. It’s now considered the oldest surviving mosque in Greece. In 1923 the building was no longer used as a mosque, due to the liberation of Thessaloniki from the Turkish occupation. It has been in the process of being restored since 2006.

TIP: Say “Yamas” when toasting in Greece. It means cheers.

Another fascinating place we visited was the Roman Agora. The ancient agora was built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD.; it was the political center of the city. In the 1960s, construction workers digging in the area to build a courthouse came across ancient remains. At that time the plans for the courthouse were halted, and an archaeologist took over and began excavating the area. I can only imagine the vast amount remains that still may lie beneath the surface in Greece. Could you imagine digging in your backyard and finding ancient remains? This concept seems so surreal to me.

4. Food – All of the food was amazing. You can see in the video everything we had with a great explanation of all that was on our plate. We also tried a local drink called ouzo with 42% alcohol and tastes like black licorice.

TIP: Make sure you try the Bougatsa, it’s a wonderful cream pastry dessert that’s fabulous!! Also, if you love sweet bread, try Tsoureki (dip it in chocolate). Yum… One of the best bakeries in Thessalonkik is Terkenlis.

5. Meeting New People – Another fascinating thing with these tours is the people you meet from different parts of the world. You get to experience different cultures not only about Thessaloniki but different cultures from the people in the tour.

6. Safety – Generally speaking, we’ve always felt safe when traveling the world because we try not to put ourselves in bad situations. That being said, the one thing we did appreciate was our tour guide kept us in safe areas, especially when it got dark.

7. Memorable Moments – Probably one of the things that we will never forget was how busy Thessaloniki is at night. We did our tour on a Tuesday night, and you would have thought it was a Friday or Saturday night in Los Angeles or New York. It was amazing how many people are out at 11 pm during the week, either drinking coffee or having a drink with friends or family. I guess that’s why they call Thessaloniki the nightlife capital of Greece and you’ll understand why after your tour or you watch our video below.

Travel Resources

If you are interested in checking hotel prices we have found to have the most competitive prices.  Click here to check out hotels.

All of our video footage is taken with GoPro HERO6.  It’s a waterproof digital action camera for travel with a touchscreen.  We use this camera daily, and we love it. If you are interested in checking it out here is the Amazon link:  Click here.

The drone we use is the DJ Spark with Remote Control Combo.  We like this drone because it’s compact, it’s effortless to take on trips, it’s easy to fly, and it shoots 1080p.  All of our drone footage on our blog posts and youtube videos are taken with this drone. We highly recommend it. If you are interested in checking it out here is the Amazon link:  Click here.

Another item we use daily is our Primocean Backpack with an insulated cooler bag.  We use this as Christie’s carry on bag on the plane and as our cooler at our final destination.  We used to use a different backpack and we switched to this one because it’s better made of durable material with quality zippers.  We love this backpack!!  The cooler section is smaller; however, all the compartments and the quality of the backpack make it a much better choice for basically the same cost.  We wish we would have thought of this item a long time ago.
